Writer's Workshop is a way for students to practice both professional and natural parts of the writing process. Students will choose what they write, and how they will publish. That said, students do need to complete a narrative, expository, and opinion/persuasive papers based on practicing all three as well as needing to write several pieces on writing genres needing growth. Writing done during Writer's workshop may also include the students weekly vocab stories, but they must follow the process.
What does it look like? Students are working at their current station (ideas/planning, drafting, revising, editing, teacher conference, or publishing) Most stations are no voice, while some are whisper. Students may conference with the teacher for ideas and feedback before moving on to publishing. Students may also be invited to conference with the teacher on necessary topics like transitions, or when to start a new paragraph. When a student is in need of writing support, or feedback, their first step is to participate in peer review.

Austin's Butterfly is an example and modeling of how students seek and give detailed feedback so that students can revisit their work and revise it to make it better. Even a great piece can be made better.
